High potential and gifted education

At Metella Road Public School, we recognise that some students learn faster and more easily than others. Our practices align with the NSW Department of Education’s High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) policy, which highlights the importance of supporting giftedness across four essential domains:

Our dedicated teachers and leaders engage in ongoing, evidence-informed HPGE professional learning to recognise and nurture the strengths of our advanced learners. Through differentiated and enriching lessons, targeted extension activities, and inclusive opportunities, we empower high potential students to grow in confidence, extend their abilities, and thrive both in and beyond the classroom.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

At Metella Road Public School, High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is embedded in everyday teaching and learning. We recognise that many of our students demonstrate high potential, and we actively nurture this to help every learner grow, thrive and excel.

  • Our teachers identify students’ individual learning needs and use evidence-informed practices to challenge, extend and support them. We offer a range of learning pathways, including enrichment and extension, so students can engage deeply in their learning.
  • Student leadership and agency are central to our HPGE approach. High potential and gifted learners are provided with meaningful opportunities to take ownership of their learning, influence decisions and engage with curriculum at greater depth, breadth and pace.
  • Students take active roles in monitoring and evaluating their progress, using reflective practices to analyse their strengths, challenges and growth. They co-construct personal learning goals that stretch their thinking, pursue areas of passion, and build advanced skills such as critical and creative thinking, problem-solving and self-regulation.
  • Learners make purposeful decisions about how they demonstrate their understanding, often selecting sophisticated, open-ended or innovative ways to showcase their learning. They are encouraged to lead discussions, mentor peers, drive collaborative projects and contribute ideas that shape classroom learning.
  • Our classrooms cultivate curiosity, confidence and independence. High potential and gifted students are supported to take intellectual risks, explore complex concepts and engage in learning that fosters both challenge and achievement. Through this, students develop the skills and dispositions to become self-directed, motivated and responsible contributors—both within our school community and beyond.
  • Our staff engage in ongoing professional learning to meet the diverse needs of all students, including those who are high potential and gifted. At Metella Road Public School, we are committed to cultivating the talents, interests and capabilities of every learner.
Across our school

At Metella Road Public School, HPGE is not confined to the classroom. It is embedded across our whole-school culture. We recognise that high potential emerges in many forms: intellectual, creative, social–emotional and physical. Our diverse range of extracurricular opportunities allows students to pursue their passions, demonstrate their strengths and extend their capabilities well beyond the core curriculum.

Staff voluntarily give their time to cultivate environments where high potential and gifted learners can flourish. These programs provide challenge, depth and authentic experiences that allow students to test ideas, collaborate, problem-solve and excel in areas of personal interest.

Academic Challenge & Enrichment

  • We offer enrichment opportunities such as debating, writing competitions and STEM/coding pathways through the Blacktown Learning Community, allowing high-potential learners to engage in advanced thinking, authentic problem-solving and deep inquiry.

Creative & Performing Arts

  • Our extensive arts programs, including the Performing Arts Extravaganza, School Spectacular, Metella’s Got Talent, and a variety of ensembles, choirs, cultural dance and music groups, provide high-potential students with opportunities to develop creative talent, lead performances and showcase excellence.

Leadership & Agency

  • Student leadership is embedded across the school through our 18 student leaders, Student Representative Council (SRC) members, Enviro Leaders and Waste Warriors, providing high-potential learners with meaningful roles that build responsibility, influence decision-making and strengthen school culture.

Clubs & Interest Groups

  • Clubs such as Chess Club, Lego Club and Drawing Club offer supportive spaces where students can explore passions, build expertise and connect with peers who share similar interests.

Sporting Excellence

  • Sporting knockout teams and representative opportunities allow high-potential athletes to compete at higher levels, refine their skills and experience challenge through teamwork and competition.

At Metella Road Public School, we proudly cultivate student talent in all forms, ensuring every high potential learner is challenged, supported and celebrated.

Across NSW

At Metella Road Public School, we lead High Potential and Gifted Education by actively engaging students in a wide range of statewide programs and competitions across New South Wales. These opportunities provide authentic challenge, extend student capability and allow high-potential learners to connect with like-minded peers beyond our school community.

Our students participate in a rich variety of NSW and Department of Education programs designed to stretch thinking, deepen learning and showcase talent, including:

  • Premier’s Reading Challenge
  • Premier’s Spelling Bee
  • Premier’s Sporting Challenge
  • Premier’s Debating Challenge

  • Blacktown Learning Community STEAM Team
  • Maths Olympiad
  • Premier’s Multicultural Public Speaking
  • Write a Book in a Day

Statewide and NSW Department of Education opportunities play an important role in extending our high potential and gifted students. At Metella Road Public School, we support students throughout the entire process, from preparing entries and building skills, to reflecting afterwards so each experience enriches future learning.

Through this combination of challenge, guidance and celebration, we ensure that high potential learners are empowered to excel, explore their passions and realise their full capabilities.
